World Environment Day 2019: #BeatAirPollution

World Environment Day 2019: #BeatAirPollution

When is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th every year. It’s a day to promote awareness of the need to protect our environment. This year’s theme is #BeatAirPollution.

Air pollution can be caused by a number of factors including agricultural activities, the burning of fossil fuels, exhaust from factories, indoor air pollution and mining.

What steps can we take to tackle air pollution today?

1. Drive less

More cars on the road means more pollution and traffic. Opt to use public transport whenever possible. Even better, walk or cycle when you can. You’ll be helping the environment and boosting your fitness levels at the same time.

2. Burn responsibly

Burning fuel at home contributes to air pollution. For clean burning, it’s necessary to have decent ventilation, high temperatures and dry fuel. Better still, ensure your home is well insulated. This means you can turn down the thermostat, reduce pollution and save money.

3. Start recycling

More recycling means less waste ending up in landfills. Air quality tends to be worse around landfills due to a higher presence of hydrogen sulfide gases. Recycling also lowers the need to burn fossil fuels such as coal, gasoline and diesel.

4. Plant trees

Trees help to reduce the amount of pollutants in the air. In London alone, trees are said to remove 850 to 2,000 tons of harmful particles from the air every year. Trees can also help prevent polluted air from being carried long distances by wind.

5. Keep your home free of dust

Did you know that approximately 10,000 liters of air enter your lungs during the course of a day? This contributes to one of the key metabolic processes in your body. Indoor air quality cannot be ignored. If possible, use a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner and regularly clean air conditioning filters.

Air pollution is an issue that affects all of us, no matter what corner of the globe we live in. Use the hashtags #WorldEnvironmentDay and #BeatAirPollution to raise awareness and show your support.
