5 Tips for getting kids to eat more vegetables

5 Tips for getting kids to eat more vegetables

Remember how your parents would remind you to ‘eat your vegetables’? Perhaps it was annoying at the time but they were onto something important. Vegetables can help strengthen a child’s immune system and fight illnesses while providing important nutrients for development.

If you’re struggling to get your child to eat more vegetables, here are some tips to try out:

1. Enable them to grow their own greens

Nothing compares to the satisfaction of growing and consuming your own food. Kids will develop a sense of pride over food they’ve grown and will be curious to see how it tastes. One of the easiest ways to grow greens at home is by using a Smart Garden 3 or Smart Garden 9.

2. Let them help in the kitchen

Give them a chance to wash, peel, and slice their vegetables (under your supervision). Then, why not let them decide how to cook and flavour it? It’s no surprise that kids will be more likely to eat a meal that they have helped to make.

3. Offer one new vegetable at a time

Serving your kids a whole plate full of vegetables is unlikely to work. If anything, it’ll just overwhelm them. Make the initial serving small and try offering one new vegetable alongside a familiar one.

4. Serve vegetable smoothies

If your child doesn’t enjoy eating vegetables, try vegetable smoothies. It’s a great way of ‘disguising’ vegetables as they are served in a drink that tastes like a milkshake. Check out this great website for inspiration.

5. Be a positive role model

Actions speak louder than words. You can’t expect a child to eat vegetables if you yourself won’t eat them. When it’s mealtime, try to eat vegetables when your child is watching. Perhaps talk to them about how vegetables can make them strong like their favourite superhero.
